SECRETARY’S REPORT
NFB of Texas
San Antonio Chapter
August 15, 2009

President Jos`e Martinez called the meeting to order at 1:08 P.M. Six members were present.

First, the Chapter listened to Presidential Release #375, which summarized the completion of the mortgage by BLIND, Inc., the signing of the Convention of Rights for Persons with Disabilities, Youth Slam activities, the March for Independence and Louis Braille coin activities, the BELL (Braille Education Through Literacy and Learning) Program, and some jokes dealing with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Discussion followed about the BELL Program.

The state convention will be October 23-25.

Discussion followed about the Chapter lunch on August 8.

The game night will be on Friday, September 25, from six to nine P.M., at Cindy Garcia’s and Sarah Litzler’s apartment, 6130 Ingraham Road, Apartment 1901, Hilltop Oaks Apartments.

Cindy Garcia has not heard from WalMart, but plans to call the location on Southwest Military for a Meet the Blind Month Activity and fund-raising.

Bryan Baldwin suggested having a fundraising activity at Sam’s Club. Cindy will call both WalMart and Sam’s.

There will be a fundraising activity at Taco Cabana, 3310 San Pedro Avenue, on Tuesday, August 25, from seven to nine P.M. There will be a receipt space. Sarah Litzler’s father has offered to make the NFB banner. For the Taco Cabana activity, there will be a poster for advertising. Members will hand out fliers.

,p class="p">Discussion followed about selling World’s Finest Chocolate or Regal’s Popcorn. Sarah Litzler offered to contact Regal’s Popcorn to donate.

Mary Donahue suggested the AccessAbility Fest at the Institute of Texan Culture to be held in October as a possible Meet the Blind Month activity. She will study the Texas Public Radio Web site after September 1.

Bryan Baldwin suggested selling raffle tickets during the state convention for a Louis Braille coin. The drawing would take place after the San Antonio Chapter report during the convention. There will be further discussion at the next meeting.

Mary Donahue presented “My Role in the Education of Blind Students,” a talk which described her work as a Braille proofreader at Education Service Center, Region 20. She presented this same talk at the 2008 NFB of Missouri state convention in St. Louis, Missouri, in March, 2008.

A few questions and comments followed her talk.

The meeting adjourned at 2:03 P.M.
