NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF TEXAS

San Antonio Chapter

Announces Upcoming Braille Class

The National Federation of the Blind of Texas San Antonio Chapter, is sponsoring a Braille class which will take place beginning on Saturday, August 20, 2011, from 10:30 A.M. to 12:15 P.M. at the Bordon Building, 4241 E Piedras Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78228, on the corner of Centerview and East Piedras Drive.

Blind youth, blind adults, and blind children and their parents are welcome to register. Sighted adults who have a connection with blind people are also welcome to enroll.

At present, 90 percent of blind children are not taught Braille, and 70 percent of the blind adults are unemployed. With the upcoming Braille class, prospective students will learn to read and write Braille, and learn various ways of using Braille in their daily lives.

By enrolling in the Braille class, students will gain knowledge, fulfillment, self-esteem, and belief in themselves by learning a whole new system of reading and writing.

  • Let Freedom Ring; Braille Letters to President Barack Obama

In the fall of 2009, the National Federation of the Blind put out a call for Americans to write letters to President Barack Obama expressing the role that being able to read and write Braille plays in their lives. Today, only ten percent of blind children are learning to read Braille in school—a shocking statistic that alone reveals glaring problems in the education of blind children in the United States.

The NFB was flooded with responses from a large variety of blind and sighted people—from school children to working professionals to retired senior citizens. While there are great variances in the people responding, one factor was the same: that Braille plays a vital role in their lives and is an important and, indeed necessary, tool for the blind.
